Ondo Finance Introduces Proxy Voting for Tokenized Equity Holders

In a move to bridge the gap between traditional and tokenized equities, Ondo Finance has introduced proxy voting for holders of its extensive range of tokenized securities. This innovation enables investors to participate in corporate governance, aligning tokenized equities more closely with their traditional counterparts. Through a collaboration with Broadridge Financial Solutions, over 250 tokenized securities on Ondo's platform can now be managed more effectively, allowing holders to review company filings and submit voting preferences via Broadridge's ProxyVote system. This can be achieved by logging in with crypto wallets, thereby accessing documents and governance tools that are typically reserved for traditional brokerage accounts. The introduction of proxy voting is significant, especially given the rapid growth of tokenized equities in the crypto sector. With over $1.1 billion in value locked, this category has more than tripled in size over the past year, according to data from RWA.xyz. As the largest issuer in this sector, Ondo Finance has reported over $700 million in stock and ETF tokens on its Global Markets platform, catering to non-U.S. investors. The addition of proxy voting to equity tokens addresses a critical gap, as these offerings have often lacked basic governance rights. Although Ondo's tokens remain distinct from the underlying shares and do not confer direct shareholder rights, the new system allows investors to express their preferences, which Ondo can then apply when voting the shares it holds. "This development aligns with Ondo's vision of making traditional financial assets more accessible," stated Matthieu de Vergnes, Ondo's global head of institutional, in an interview with CoinDesk. "By being on-chain, investors benefit from the free transferability and compatibility with DeFi, coupled with the governance associated with the underlying assets." Broadridge, a leading processor of proxy votes in traditional markets, is extending its infrastructure to blockchain systems through this collaboration. The firm aims to support both digital and conventional assets within the same workflows, thereby enhancing the overall investor experience. According to Danielle Gurrieri, senior vice president and head of product management at Broadridge, providing investors with the same level of auditability, transparency, and compliance will significantly contribute to making the tokenized world more scalable, thereby fostering trust among end investors.
