Over 100 Cryptocurrency Firms Push for US Senate to Advance Market Regulation Bill
A collective group of US cryptocurrency businesses and trade organizations has urged the Senate Banking Committee to proceed with the markup of the Clarity Act, which aims to establish a federal framework for cryptocurrency markets. In a letter addressed to key committee members, the coalition emphasized that government agencies alone cannot provide stable regulatory guidelines. The letter referenced the risks of reverting to 'enforcement-based regulation,' citing a series of court cases brought by the SEC and CFTC under the Biden administration. The effort is backed by over 100 signatories, including prominent companies such as Coinbase, Circle, and Ripple, as well as developer groups and state blockchain associations. The coalition outlined six key priorities, including preserving consumer rewards associated with payment stablecoins, defining oversight roles for regulatory bodies, and protecting non-custodial tool developers. Additionally, the group called for simplified disclosure rules and a federal standard to prevent a patchwork of state laws. The absence of US legislation may lead to investment, job, and development opportunities being driven offshore, as other major jurisdictions like the European Union have already established comprehensive cryptocurrency frameworks. According to Ji Hun Kim, CEO of the Crypto Council for Innovation, 'The US needs clear and comprehensive rules for digital asset markets to lead in the global arena.' Kim also stated that the Senate Banking Committee can build on previous bipartisan efforts by advancing legislation that provides regulatory clarity, robust consumer protections, and strong safeguards for developers, ultimately setting the global standard for digital asset markets.
