Ondo Finance Introduces Proxy Voting for $700 Million in Tokenized Equities
Ondo Finance is bridging the gap between tokenized equities and their traditional counterparts by introducing a feature that enables investors to participate in corporate decision-making. In partnership with Broadridge Financial Solutions, the platform now allows holders of over 250 tokenized securities to review company documents and cast their votes through Broadridge's ProxyVote system. Investors can access these features using their crypto wallets, thereby gaining access to tools and documents typically available only through brokerage accounts. The introduction of proxy voting for tokenized equities is significant, as this sector has experienced rapid growth in the crypto space, with over $1.1 billion in value locked, more than tripling in size over the past year, according to RWA.xyz data. As the largest issuer in this sector, Ondo has over $700 million in stock and ETF tokens on its Global Markets platform, catering to non-U.S. investors. The addition of proxy voting to equity tokens is crucial, as these offerings have often lacked basic governance rights. Although Ondo's tokens remain separate from the underlying shares and do not grant direct shareholder rights, the new system enables investors to express their preferences, which Ondo can then apply when voting the shares it holds. "This development aligns with Ondo's vision of making traditional financial assets more accessible," said Matthieu de Vergnes, Ondo's global head of institutional, in an interview with CoinDesk. "By being on-chain, investors can benefit from the free transferability and DeFi compatibility of these assets, while also having the governance rights associated with the underlying assets." Broadridge, which processes large volumes of proxy votes in traditional markets, is extending its infrastructure to support blockchain systems. The goal is to provide a unified workflow for both digital and conventional assets. According to Danielle Gurrieri, senior vice president and head of product management at Broadridge, providing investors with the same level of auditability, transparency, and compliance will "go a long way in making the tokenized world more scalable and trustworthy for end investors."
