Innovative Wallet Offers Solution to Bitcoin's Quantum Vulnerability Without Requiring a Network Fork

The developers of a newly launched wallet claim to have developed a method to mitigate the risks associated with quantum computing for Bitcoin, utilizing a smart contract layer that operates in parallel with the Bitcoin network without requiring any modifications to the network itself. On Tuesday, Postquant Labs unveiled its Quip Network wallet, which operates on the Arch Network, a system allowing developers to build smart contracts directly anchored to Bitcoin. This approach enables the addition of a post-quantum signature scheme called WOTS+, enhancing Bitcoin's existing security without relying on elliptic curve math that could be compromised by a quantum computer. By utilizing a 'Layer 2' network, which processes transactions and settles them on the main Bitcoin chain, developers can introduce new features without altering the base layer of Bitcoin. According to Postquant Labs CEO Colton Dillion, 'The Bitcoin community has delayed addressing the quantum problem for years, despite it being discussed by Satoshi himself. While developers estimate that a protocol upgrade could take 5 to 10 years, our approach provides similar protection immediately.' The launch of Quip's wallet comes amidst ongoing debates within the Bitcoin community regarding the best approach to addressing quantum risk. Prominent developer Jameson Lopp has proposed phasing out quantum-vulnerable addresses, while Paul Sztorc's eCash hard fork proposal involves copying the Bitcoin chain and introducing sidechains, including a quantum-resistant one. Quip's approach argues that neither a soft fork nor a consensus change is necessary, eliminating the need for community votes or broad miner and node support. However, the approach has its technical trade-offs. Jameson Lopp argues that Layer 2 protection is insufficient due to the potential for public key leakage when a user broadcasts a transaction. The Quip wallet launch is scheduled for next week, and a third-party audit is currently underway. Although Quip's quantum-resistant accounts already exist on Ethereum and Solana, the Bitcoin deployment is new, and Arch Network is still in its early stages of development. Postquant Labs CTO Dr. Richard Carback notes that their approach reduces the window for a quantum attack to as little as two blocks, equivalent to roughly 20 minutes. The outcome of these competing approaches will depend partly on the timeline for the development of quantum computers. Bitcoin holders most concerned about quantum risk have historically been resistant to wrapped or smart-contract-anchored products.
