KuCoin EU Bolsters Anti-Money Laundering Team to Address Austrian Regulatory Concerns

In an effort to address regulatory concerns, the European division of cryptocurrency exchange KuCoin has enhanced its anti-money laundering and compliance capabilities. This move comes after the exchange was instructed by Austria's Financial Market Authority (FMA) to halt its European operations due to a shortage of staff in these critical areas. KuCoin EU, which holds a Markets in Crypto Assets (MiCA) license from the FMA, has appointed Carmen Kleinhans as its new Anti-Money Laundering Officer, while also expanding its broader AML function. Additionally, the company has hired seasoned Austrian compliance experts Stephan Klinger and Bernd Träxler as Deputy Anti-Money Laundering Officers. According to KuCoin EU Managing Director Sabina Liu, the exchange has maintained open communication with the FMA since the regulatory action in February. Liu emphasized that the exchange has been working diligently to strengthen its compliance team, resulting in a significant expansion of its personnel. This development is part of KuCoin's broader efforts to navigate regulatory challenges, having faced recent setbacks including a ban in the U.S. following a Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) order and a regulatory issue in Dubai. Liu noted that discussions with the FMA are ongoing, but a specific timeline for resuming European operations has not been confirmed.
