Bitcoin (BTC) has surged past $78,000, boosting the broader cryptocurrency market, as risk sentiment improved following the extension of the ceasefire with Iran by U.S. President Donald Trump.

This move has ended weeks of volatile trading between $65,000 and $75,000, providing momentum traders with the catalyst they had been anticipating. Momentum traders typically invest when an upward trend is confirmed, and Bitcoin's breakthrough could attract more buyers, further amplifying the momentum. According to analysts at Marex, 'The market spent months within the $65 to $75 range.

Breaking out of this range is significant as it alters behavior. Sellers who were previously comfortable selling rallies above $74 must now reassess. Momentum buyers who were waiting for confirmation finally have a solid foundation to build on.' On-chain indicators also support this trend, with the number of coins held in wallets tied to centralized exchanges dropping to a multi-year low of 2.67 million BTC, indicating continued investor accumulation that could lead to a supply shock. However, QCP Capital advises caution due to the persistent richness of bitcoin put options on Deribit, suggesting that crypto trends are currently linked to oil prices and interest-rate outlooks.

In traditional markets, WTI crude futures are trading around $90, having rebounded from a low of $78 on Friday. Meanwhile, DeFi security risks persist due to the proliferation of hacks. The Sui-based Volo protocol was recently drained of over $3 million, highlighting the need for vigilance.
