Ondo Finance Introduces Proxy Voting for $700 Million in Tokenized Equities

Ondo Finance has taken a significant step towards bridging the gap between traditional and tokenized equities by introducing proxy voting for its token holders. This move enables investors to engage in corporate governance, a crucial aspect of traditional stock ownership. In partnership with Broadridge Financial Solutions, Ondo's platform now allows holders of over 250 tokenized securities to review company documents and cast their votes through the ProxyVote system. Investors can access these features using their crypto wallets, similar to those found in traditional brokerage accounts. This development comes as the tokenized equities sector experiences rapid growth, with over $1.1 billion in value locked, more than tripling in size over the past year. As the largest issuer in this sector, Ondo boasts over $700 million in tokenized stocks and ETFs on its Global Markets platform, catering to non-US investors. The introduction of proxy voting is a significant milestone, as tokenized equities often lacked basic governance rights. Although Ondo's tokens remain separate from the underlying shares and do not grant direct shareholder rights, the new system enables investors to express their preferences, which Ondo can then apply when voting on the shares it holds. According to Matthieu de Vergnes, Ondo's global head of institutional, this move aligns with the company's vision to make traditional financial assets more accessible. "This development combines the benefits of on-chain assets, such as free transferability and DeFi compatibility, with the governance rights associated with the underlying assets," he stated in an interview with CoinDesk. Broadridge, a leading processor of proxy votes in traditional markets, is extending its infrastructure to support blockchain systems. The firm aims to provide a unified workflow for both digital and conventional assets, ensuring the same level of auditability, transparency, and compliance. "By providing investors with the same level of trust and scalability, we can make the tokenized world more accessible and trustworthy for end-investors," said Danielle Gurrieri, senior vice president and head of product management at Broadridge.
