KuCoin EU Bolsters Anti-Money Laundering Team to Address Austrian Regulatory Concerns

In a move to address regulatory concerns, the European division of global cryptocurrency platform KuCoin has augmented its anti-money laundering and compliance capabilities. This development follows an order from Austria's Financial Market Authority (FMA) for the exchange to halt its European operations due to a shortage of AML and compliance personnel. KuCoin EU, which holds a Markets in Crypto Assets (MiCA) license from the FMA, has appointed Carmen Kleinhans as its Anti-Money Laundering Officer, alongside expanding its broader AML function, as announced in a recent press release. Additionally, the exchange has hired seasoned Austrian compliance experts Stephan Klinger and Bernd Träxler as Deputy Anti-Money Laundering Officers. According to KuCoin EU Managing Director Sabina Liu, the exchange has maintained open communication with the FMA since the regulatory action in February. Liu emphasized the exchange's commitment to transparency and dialogue with the regulator. As part of its efforts to strengthen its compliance team, KuCoin EU has made several key appointments, significantly expanding its team. The exchange has faced recent challenges, including being barred from the U.S. following a Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) order and facing regulatory issues in Dubai for operating without the necessary license. Liu did not provide a specific timeline for when the Austrian regulator might permit KuCoin EU to resume its European operations, stating that discussions with the FMA are ongoing.
