The threat of quantum attacks on cryptocurrency has become more real, as a researcher has successfully broken a 15-bit elliptic curve key on publicly accessible quantum hardware. This achievement has earned the researcher a 1 bitcoin bounty, worth approximately $78,000. The breakthrough is significant, as it demonstrates the rapidly advancing capabilities of quantum computers and their potential to compromise the security of cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum. Elliptic curve cryptography, which underlies the security of these currencies, relies on the difficulty of deriving a private key from its public counterpart. However, quantum computers running Shor's algorithm can potentially overcome this challenge. While the broken key is much smaller than the 256-bit keys used in Bitcoin, the achievement is still a major milestone, representing a 512-fold increase over the previous public demonstration. The researcher's success has sparked concerns about the security of wallets with publicly visible keys, which could be vulnerable to quantum attacks.
