US Regulator Adopts AI to Streamline Crypto Registration Process

The US Commodity Futures Trading Commission, known for its open approach to digital assets, is now turning to artificial intelligence to compensate for a significant reduction in its workforce. According to Chairman Mike Selig, the agency is developing new technologies to increase efficiency, including the use of AI to review registration applications and support market surveillance. Currently, the registration process involves manual document submission, but the CFTC is working to automate this process. Selig explained that AI tools can review applications, identify potential issues, and make the process faster and more efficient for staff. The CFTC is also utilizing Microsoft's Copilot and developing in-house tools for reviewing swap data and conducting market surveillance. Selig emphasized the agency's commitment to embracing technology, particularly in the oversight of emerging technologies such as crypto and prediction markets. A key initiative under Selig's leadership has been the development of a 'taxonomy' for digital assets, providing clarity on regulatory jurisdictions. This joint guidance with the Securities and Exchange Commission aims to give market participants confidence in engaging with crypto systems and assets. The CFTC has also been involved in the regulation of prediction markets, with Selig taking a firm stance on the agency's exclusive jurisdiction. This has led to conflicts with states that have challenged companies for violating state gaming laws. Recent enforcement actions, including a case against a US Army Special Forces soldier accused of insider trading, demonstrate the CFTC's commitment to taking action against bad actors in the markets.
