Bitcoin Momentum Traders Receive Long-Awaited Signal

The bitcoin price, currently at $75,753.64, has surpassed the $78,000 mark, thereby boosting the broader cryptocurrency market. This development follows an improvement in risk sentiment after U.S. President Donald Trump extended the ceasefire with Iran, which also led to gains in stock index futures. The cryptocurrency's upward movement has ended the volatile trading period between $65,000 and $75,000 seen in March and early April, providing momentum traders with the long-awaited signal to enter the market. Momentum traders typically invest when they observe evidence of an upward trend. Bitcoin's recent breakout serves as proof of this trend, potentially attracting more buyers and further amplifying the momentum. According to analysts at Marex, the market's prolonged period within the $65 to $75 range has come to an end, which is significant as it alters investor behavior. Sellers who previously felt comfortable selling during rallies above $74 must now reassess their strategy, while momentum buyers have finally received the confirmation they were waiting for. On-chain indicators also suggest the same trend. For instance, the number of coins held in wallets associated with centralized exchanges has dropped to a fresh multi-year low of 2.67 million BTC, according to data from CryptoQuant. This indicates continued investor accumulation, which could lead to a supply shock. Delta Exchange noted that the shrinking bitcoin supply on exchanges, with fewer coins available for sale, more BTC being transferred to long-term holders, and tightening liquidity, all point to bitcoin becoming increasingly scarce. However, QCP Capital advises caution, citing the persistent relative richness of bitcoin put options on Deribit, which are used as a hedge against potential price drops. The firm added that crypto trends currently appear to be tied to the price of oil and the interest-rate outlook. In traditional markets, WTI crude futures are trading around $90 after bouncing back from a low of $78 on Friday. Meanwhile, DeFi security risks remain a concern due to the proliferation of hacks. Earlier today, the Sui-based Volo protocol was drained of over $3 million, just days after the KelpDAO event caused collateral damage across the sector. The chart shows bitcoin's daily price movements, with lines indicating the 100-day and 200-day average prices. BTC's price has established a firm foothold above the 100-day average, which is a pivotal development as it previously capped the bounce in January. Now that the price has pierced through this level, it typically signals a strengthening of bullish momentum, with the focus shifting to the 200-day average, currently positioned at $85,900.
