Israel Introduces Its First Regulated Stablecoin, the Digital Shekel
In a groundbreaking move, Israel's Capital Market Authority has given the green light to the country's first regulated stablecoin, pegged to the value of the Israeli shekel. Following a rigorous two-year evaluation and pilot process, Tel Aviv-based cryptocurrency exchange Bits of Gold has been authorized to issue the token. The development of BILS was made possible through a collaborative effort with the Solana network and prominent crypto custodian Fireblocks, with auditing oversight provided by the renowned consultancy firm EY. The stablecoin market has experienced exponential growth over the past 18 months, reaching a staggering $300 billion, driven in part by the establishment of formal regulatory frameworks in major markets such as the United States. However, the dominance of US dollar-pegged tokens has raised concerns among non-US markets about potential threats to financial and digital sovereignty. The Israeli shekel, backed by a robust technology sector and prudent macroeconomic management, has emerged as one of the top-performing fiat currencies among developed markets. Over the past year, the shekel has appreciated by over 20% against the US dollar, according to Visual Capitalist, making it the best-performing currency among countries with an annual GDP exceeding $250 billion. By introducing the shekel to the blockchain, it joins the ranks of other prominent currencies, including the euro, yen, and Singapore dollar, which are increasingly gaining traction in blockchain-based financial systems, as noted by Bits of Gold in their announcement.
