US Justice Department Drops Investigation, Paving Way for Trump's Federal Reserve Nominee
The US Department of Justice's decision to drop its investigation into Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell could signify a crucial step forward for President Donald Trump's control over the country's financial and economic policy. With this development, Trump's nominee to succeed Powell, Kevin Warsh, may now have a clearer path to confirmation. Warsh, who has substantial personal wealth, including assets in the cryptocurrency sector, has been awaiting a final Senate vote after his confirmation hearing. Trump, who has consistently criticized Powell for maintaining high US interest rates, selected Warsh to address this issue. However, Republican Senator Thom Tillis had vowed to block Warsh's confirmation as long as the DOJ pursued its investigation into Powell regarding cost overruns in a Federal Reserve building project. The DOJ's decision to drop the probe and refer the matter to the Fed's inspector general has significant implications. US Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro stated that her office would close the investigation, allowing the inspector general to conduct an inquiry and issue a report. This move has increased the likelihood of Warsh's confirmation, with prediction markets reflecting an over 80% chance of his confirmation before May 15. The development also means that Trump may gain greater influence over US monetary policy, with more allies on the Federal Reserve board. Warsh's confirmation would enable the Republican-majority Senate to move more quickly in making decisions about financial policy, including regulations for the crypto industry and stablecoin issuers. Senator Elizabeth Warren criticized the move, arguing that it was an attempt to facilitate Warsh's confirmation. Tillis, however, expressed support for Warsh, describing him as a 'great nominee' and indicating that he would vote in favor of Warsh's confirmation now that the DOJ has dropped its investigation into Powell.
