Israel Introduces Its First Regulated Stablecoin, the Digital Shekel

In a groundbreaking move, Israel's Capital Market Authority has given the green light to the country's first regulated stablecoin, pegged to the value of the Israeli shekel. This milestone was achieved after a rigorous two-year evaluation and pilot process, with Tel Aviv-based cryptocurrency exchange Bits of Gold receiving authorization to issue the token. The stablecoin, dubbed BILS, is the result of a collaborative effort between Bits of Gold, the Solana network, and prominent crypto custodian Fireblocks, with Big Four consultancy firm EY providing auditing oversight. The stablecoin sector has experienced rapid growth over the past 18 months, with its value surpassing $300 billion, driven in part by the establishment of formal regulatory frameworks in major markets like the US. However, the dominance of US dollar-pegged tokens has raised concerns in non-US markets about potential threats to financial and digital sovereignty. According to Bits of Gold, the Israeli shekel has proven to be one of the stronger performing fiat currencies among developed markets, backed by a resilient technology sector and consistent macroeconomic management. Over the past year, the shekel has gained over 20% against the US dollar, making it the best-performing currency among countries with an annual GDP exceeding $250 billion. By introducing the shekel to the blockchain, it joins the ranks of other prominent currencies like the euro, yen, and Singapore dollar, which are increasingly being used in blockchain-based financial systems.
