KuCoin EU Bolsters Anti-Money Laundering Capabilities to Address Austrian Regulatory Concerns

In a move to address regulatory concerns, KuCoin EU, the European subsidiary of the global cryptocurrency exchange, has appointed seasoned anti-money laundering and compliance experts. This development follows an order from Austria's Financial Market Authority (FMA) to halt business operations in the EU due to a shortage of AML and compliance staff. Carmen Kleinhans has been appointed as the Anti-Money Laundering Officer (AMLO), with the company also expanding its AML function. Additionally, Austrian compliance veterans Stephan Klinger and Bernd Träxler have been hired as deputy anti-money laundering officers. According to KuCoin EU Managing Director Sabina Liu, the exchange has maintained open communication with the FMA since the regulatory action in February. Liu stated that the exchange has been strengthening its compliance team, making several key appointments to ensure transparency and adherence to regulatory requirements. This effort comes as KuCoin faces challenges in other markets, including a ban in the U.S. following a CFTC order and regulatory issues in Dubai. However, Liu could not provide a specific timeline for when the Austrian regulator would permit KuCoin EU to resume European operations, citing the need for further discussions with the FMA.
