Breakthrough in Quantum Attack: Researcher Claims 1 Bitcoin Bounty
The threat of quantum attacks on cryptocurrency has become more tangible, as a researcher has successfully broken a 15-bit elliptic curve key, a crucial component of cryptographic security. This achievement, made possible by publicly accessible quantum hardware, has earned the researcher a 1 bitcoin bounty, equivalent to approximately $78,000. The breakthrough, announced by quantum security startup Project Eleven, underscores the growing concern over the potential vulnerability of major blockchains, including Bitcoin and Ethereum, to quantum attacks. Elliptic curve cryptography, which enables crypto wallets to prove fund ownership without revealing private keys, is susceptible to quantum computer attacks using Shor's algorithm. Although the 15-bit key broken by the researcher is significantly smaller than the 256-bit keys used in Bitcoin, the achievement demonstrates the rapid progress being made in quantum computing and highlights the need for the development of quantum-safe cryptographic protocols. The previous public demonstration, which broke a 6-bit key, was surpassed by a factor of 512 in just seven months, indicating an accelerating pace of advancements in the field. Theoretical estimates suggest that the resource requirements for a full 256-bit attack are decreasing rapidly, with some predictions putting the cost below 500,000 physical qubits. This raises concerns for wallets with publicly visible keys, estimated to hold around 6.9 million bitcoin, which could be vulnerable to quantum attacks. In response, developers are exploring migration paths, including the proposed BIP-360, which would introduce quantum-safe address types, and other post-quantum transition plans are being developed for various blockchains.
