Israel Introduces Its First Regulated Digital Currency: The Shekel Stablecoin

In a groundbreaking move, Israel's Capital Market Authority has given the green light to the country's first regulated stablecoin, pegged to the value of the shekel. This development comes after a rigorous two-year evaluation and pilot process, with Tel Aviv-based cryptocurrency exchange Bits of Gold receiving the necessary authorization to issue the token. The BILS stablecoin was created in partnership with the Solana network and crypto custodian Fireblocks, with Big Four consultancy firm EY providing auditing oversight. The stablecoin sector has experienced rapid growth over the past 18 months, exceeding $300 billion in value, driven by the establishment of formal regulatory frameworks in major markets like the US. However, the dominance of US dollar-pegged tokens has raised concerns about the potential loss of financial and digital sovereignty in non-US markets. The Israeli shekel has demonstrated remarkable strength, gaining over 20% against the dollar in the past year, making it the best-performing currency among countries with a GDP exceeding $250 billion. By introducing the shekel to the blockchain, Israel is positioning its currency alongside other leading currencies, such as the euro, yen, and Singapore dollar, which are increasingly being used in blockchain-based financial systems.
