DeFi Community Unites to Support Aave Users with Hundreds of Millions in Rescue Plan After Massive Crypto Hack
The decentralized finance world is witnessing an extraordinary display of unity in response to the recent Kelp DAO exploit, which impacted Aave, one of the largest DeFi lending protocols. A massive recovery effort, dubbed 'DeFi United,' has been launched, with approximately $303 million in commitments secured as of Monday, according to the initiative's website. Although much of the capital is still awaiting governance approval, the response has been remarkable, with numerous industry leaders contributing to the cause. Aave itself is at the forefront of the effort, with a governance proposal outlining a plan to allocate up to 250,000 ETH for the recovery. Founder Stani Kulechov has also pledged to donate 5,000 ETH personally. Other key contributors include Emilio Frangella, Ernesto Boado, BGD Labs, and KPK's Marcelo Ruiz de Orlano. The response has extended beyond Aave, with Consensys and its founder Joseph Lubin committing up to 30,000 ETH in financial support. Sharplink played a strategic advisory role in the discussions. Lido, EtherFi, Mantle, and Compound have also proposed significant contributions to support users and limit bad debt across DeFi. Additionally, Babylon Foundation, Renzo, Circle Ventures, Avalanche Foundation, Solana Foundation, and Justin Sun have made notable deposits or commitments. The list of participants continues to grow, with Ethena, LayerZero, Frax Finance, Ink Foundation, and Tyro also involved. Aave Labs has emphasized that these are long-standing relationships across the ecosystem, with teams like Consensys and Sharplink having been in close contact throughout. The contributions are structured in various ways, including grants, deposits, and credit lines, reflecting different approaches to balancing support with risk management. In parallel, Aave Labs has proposed that Arbitrum governance approve the release of roughly 30,765.67 ETH immobilized by the network's Security Council into the coordinated remediation effort. While much of the capital remains subject to governance approval, the breadth of participation highlights the widespread impact of the exploit across DeFi. As Joseph Lubin noted, 'The Ethereum ecosystem has always been at its best when it moves together. DeFi United is exactly that: a broad, coordinated response to protect users and strengthen the infrastructure we've all helped build.'
