Israel Introduces its First Regulated Digital Currency: the Shekel Stablecoin
In a groundbreaking move, Israel's Capital Market Authority has given the green light to the country's first regulated stablecoin, pegged to the value of the shekel. Following a rigorous two-year evaluation and pilot process, Tel Aviv-based cryptocurrency exchange Bits of Gold has been authorized to issue the token. Developed in conjunction with the Solana network and leading crypto custodian Fireblocks, with auditing oversight provided by EY, BILS represents a major breakthrough in Israel's digital currency sector. The stablecoin market has experienced exponential growth over the past 18 months, surpassing $300 billion, driven by the establishment of formal regulatory frameworks in key markets such as the US. However, the dominance of US dollar-pegged tokens has raised concerns about the potential loss of financial and digital sovereignty in non-US markets. The Israeli shekel has demonstrated remarkable resilience, with a gain of over 20% against the dollar in the past year, making it the best-performing currency among countries with a GDP exceeding $250 billion. By introducing the shekel to the blockchain, Israel is positioning itself alongside other leading economies, including the euro, yen, and Singapore dollar, which are increasingly gaining traction in blockchain-based financial systems.
