Innovative Wallet Offers Solution to Bitcoin's Quantum Vulnerability Without Requiring a Network Fork
The developers of a newly introduced wallet claim to have devised a method to mitigate the risks associated with quantum computing by utilizing a smart contract layer that operates in conjunction with the Bitcoin network, without necessitating any alterations to the network itself. Postquant Labs has unveiled the Quip Network's post-quantum bitcoin wallet, which operates on the Arch Network, a system enabling developers to construct smart contracts directly anchored to Bitcoin. This approach allows for the addition of a post-quantum signature scheme called WOTS+, enhancing Bitcoin's existing security without relying on elliptic curve math that could be compromised by a quantum computer. By employing a 'Layer 2' network, developers can introduce new features without modifying Bitcoin's base layer. The launch of this wallet occurs amidst an ongoing debate within the Bitcoin community regarding the best approach to address quantum risk, with some proposals suggesting a soft fork or hard fork, while Quip's method requires no consensus change or community vote. The effectiveness of this approach, however, is subject to technical trade-offs and the pace at which quantum computers become a reality.
