KuCoin EU Boosts Anti-Money Laundering Team to Address Austrian Regulatory Concerns

In a move to address regulatory concerns, KuCoin's European division has expanded its anti-money laundering and compliance capabilities. This development comes after the Austrian Financial Market Authority (FMA) ordered the cryptocurrency exchange to halt its European operations due to a shortage of AML and compliance staff. KuCoin EU, which is licensed under the Markets in Crypto Assets (MiCA) framework, has appointed Carmen Kleinhans as its Anti-Money Laundering Officer. Additionally, the company has hired seasoned compliance experts Stephan Klinger and Bernd Träxler as Deputy Anti-Money Laundering Officers, bolstering its AML function. According to KuCoin EU Managing Director Sabina Liu, the exchange has maintained open communication with the FMA since the regulatory action in February. Liu emphasized that the exchange has been actively strengthening its compliance team, making several key appointments to ensure transparency and regulatory adherence. KuCoin has faced challenges recently, including being barred from the US market by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) and facing regulatory issues in Dubai. However, Liu did not provide a specific timeline for when KuCoin EU might resume operations in Europe, stating that discussions with the FMA are ongoing.
