US Authorities Arrest Army Special Forces Member for Allegedly Betting on Venezuela Raid

The US Department of Justice has arrested a master sergeant in the US Army, alleging that he used classified information about a forthcoming military operation in Venezuela to place bets and win approximately $400,000. The accused, Gannon Ken Van Dyke, is said to have created a betting account and placed multiple wagers on the outcome of the operation, which was aimed at detaining former Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro. Van Dyke, a member of the US Army Special Forces, allegedly used his knowledge of the operation to inform his betting decisions, which has been described as 'clear insider trading' by US Attorney Jay Clayton. The US Commodity Futures Trading Commission is also pursuing an insider trading complaint against Van Dyke, with Chairman Mike Selig stating that the defendant's actions endangered US national security and put the lives of American service members at risk. Following the raid, Van Dyke allegedly attempted to conceal his identity and withdraw his winnings, which were then converted into a cryptocurrency and transferred into a brokerage account. The incident has drawn attention to the use of confidential information for personal gain, with US President Donald Trump expressing his disapproval of such activities.
