Major Players in the Crypto Industry Unite to Support Aave Users Affected by Massive Hack
The world of decentralized finance has often been marked by divisions, but in the face of crisis, an unusual level of cooperation has emerged. Following a significant crypto hack, Aave, one of the largest lending protocols in DeFi, has become the focal point of a broad recovery effort. This endeavor, dubbed 'DeFi United,' has garnered approximately $303 million in commitments as of Monday, according to its website, with a substantial portion of the capital still awaiting governance approval. The exploit, which had a ripple effect on rsETH markets and posed risks to lending positions on Aave, has prompted a highly coordinated industry response. Aave Labs has outlined a plan for the DAO to allocate up to 250,000 ETH as part of the recovery effort, with founder Stani Kulechov personally donating 5,000 ETH. Other key contributors include Emilio Frangella, Ernesto Boado, BGD Labs, and KPK's Marcelo Ruiz de Orlano. The response has extended beyond Aave, with Consensys and its founder Joseph Lubin committing up to 30,000 ETH in financial support. Sharplink has played a strategic advisory role in these discussions. The effort has also drawn contributions from Lido, EtherFi, Mantle, and Compound, among others. Additionally, entities such as Babylon Foundation, Renzo, Circle Ventures, Avalanche Foundation, Solana Foundation, and Justin Sun have made deposits into Aave. The list of participants continues to grow, with Ethena, LayerZero, Frax Finance, and Ink Foundation also involved. The contributions have taken various forms, including grants, deposits, and credit lines, highlighting different approaches to balancing support with risk management. Aave Labs has proposed that Arbitrum governance approve the release of roughly 30,765.67 ETH to support the coordinated remediation effort, aiming to 'make affected rsETH holders whole' and restore rsETH's backing. Much of the capital remains subject to governance approval, but the breadth of participation underscores the widespread impact of the exploit across DeFi.
