Israel Introduces Its First Regulated Digital Currency: The Shekel Stablecoin

In a historic move, Israel's Capital Market Authority has given the green light to the country's first regulated stablecoin, pegged to the value of the shekel. Following a rigorous two-year evaluation and pilot process, Tel Aviv-based cryptocurrency exchange Bits of Gold has been authorized to issue the BILS token. The development of BILS was a collaborative effort between Bits of Gold, the Solana network, and Fireblocks, with auditing oversight provided by the renowned consultancy firm EY. The stablecoin market, which has experienced unprecedented growth over the past 18 months, now exceeds $300 billion in value. This surge can be attributed to the establishment of formal regulatory frameworks in major markets such as the United States. However, the dominance of US dollar-pegged tokens has raised concerns among non-US markets about the potential loss of financial and digital sovereignty. The Israeli shekel has demonstrated remarkable strength, with a gain of over 20% against the US dollar in the past year, making it the best-performing currency among countries with a GDP exceeding $250 billion. By introducing the shekel to the blockchain, it joins the ranks of other prominent currencies, including the euro, yen, and Singapore dollar, which are increasingly being utilized in blockchain-based financial systems. According to Bits of Gold, this move positions the shekel alongside these leading currencies, which are gaining traction in the world of blockchain finance.
