US Crypto Regulation: CFTC to Leverage AI for Application Reviews
The US Commodity Futures Trading Commission, known for its openness to digital assets, is now embracing artificial intelligence to compensate for a significant reduction in its workforce. In an interview, Chairman Mike Selig discussed how the agency plans to utilize AI and automation to review registration applications and assist in market surveillance, thereby making the process more efficient. Currently, the registration process involves manual document submission, but the CFTC is working on automating this process. Selig explained that AI tools can review applications, flag issues for staff, and reject incomplete or incorrect submissions. The agency is also training staff to use Microsoft's Copilot and developing in-house tools for reviewing swap data and market surveillance. Under Selig's leadership, the CFTC has been proactive in overseeing emerging technologies, including crypto and prediction markets. A key initiative has been the joint guidance with the Securities and Exchange Commission to establish a 'taxonomy' for digital assets, providing clarity on regulatory jurisdictions. The CFTC is also taking action against fraud and manipulation in crypto markets. Additionally, the agency has been involved in controversies surrounding prediction markets, with Selig asserting the CFTC's exclusive jurisdiction over these firms. The CFTC has recently joined a Department of Justice case against an individual accused of insider trading in prediction markets, demonstrating its commitment to enforcing regulations in this area.
