Israel Introduces its First Regulated Digital Currency: the Shekel Stablecoin

In a groundbreaking move, Israel's Capital Market Authority has granted approval for the nation's first stablecoin, pegged to the value of the shekel. Following a rigorous two-year evaluation and pilot process, Tel Aviv-based cryptocurrency exchange Bits of Gold has been authorized to issue the token. The BILS stablecoin is the result of a collaborative effort between Bits of Gold, the Solana network, and prominent crypto custodian Fireblocks, with auditing provided by the renowned Big Four consultancy firm EY. The stablecoin market has experienced exponential growth over the past 18 months, surpassing $300 billion in value. This surge is largely attributed to the establishment of formal regulatory frameworks in major markets such as the United States. However, concerns have been raised in non-US markets regarding the potential loss of financial and digital sovereignty due to the dominance of US dollar-pegged tokens. According to Bits of Gold, the Israeli shekel has demonstrated remarkable strength among developed markets, buoyed by a thriving technology sector and prudent macroeconomic management. Over the past year, the shekel has appreciated by over 20% against the US dollar, making it the top-performing currency among nations with an annual GDP exceeding $250 billion. By introducing the shekel to the blockchain, it joins the ranks of other leading currencies, including the euro, yen, and Singapore dollar, which are increasingly gaining traction in blockchain-based financial systems.
