Innovative Wallet Addresses Bitcoin's Quantum Vulnerability Without Requiring a Fork
The developers of a new wallet claim to have developed a solution to mitigate the risks associated with quantum computing, utilizing a smart contract layer that operates in conjunction with Bitcoin without necessitating any alterations to the network. Postquant Labs introduced the Quip Network's post-quantum bitcoin wallet, which operates on Arch Network, a system enabling developers to create smart contracts directly anchored to Bitcoin. This approach allows for the addition of a post-quantum signature scheme called WOTS+, enhancing Bitcoin's security without relying on elliptic curve math that could be compromised by a quantum computer. By utilizing a 'Layer 2' network, developers can introduce new features without modifying Bitcoin's base layer. The launch of Quip's wallet comes amidst ongoing discussions within the Bitcoin community regarding the best approach to addressing quantum risk, with some proposals suggesting a soft fork or hard fork, while Quip's method requires no consensus change or community vote.
