A Proposal, Not a Heist: Understanding the Bitcoin Plan to Reallocate Satoshi-Linked Coins

Paul Sztorc, CEO of LayerTwo Labs, is at the center of a backlash surrounding the proposed eCash Bitcoin fork, scheduled for August. The fork would replicate Bitcoin's history, providing holders with an equivalent balance on the new network. However, the plan to reallocate Satoshi Nakamoto's dormant coins has raised concerns. Approximately 1.1 million BTC, attributed to Satoshi, would normally be copied to the new chain, but Sztorc's plan would allocate 600,000 eCash to those addresses and redirect 500,000 eCash to investors who fund the project. This has led to accusations of theft, with critics arguing that rewriting forked-chain balances at addresses a user does not control sets a bad precedent. Proponents of the plan argue that it is not technically theft, but rather a necessary step to fund the new project. The debate has sparked a property-rights fight, with some arguing that any proposal that seeks to evolve or improve Bitcoin by violating the property rights of the creator is a serious ethical misstep. The timing of the proposal has also been criticized, as it comes amid debates over proposals to freeze or restrict old quantum-vulnerable coins, including addresses believed to belong to Satoshi. The eCash fight has highlighted the importance of preserving inviolable property rights on the Bitcoin network, with some arguing that any intervention around Satoshi-linked coins could damage Bitcoin's core monetary promise. The proposal has also raised questions about the durability and immutability of Bitcoin, with some comparing it to gold's durability and arguing that bitcoin should offer similar confidence across generations. Sztorc has previously pushed for the adoption of Drivechains, a proposal that would allow developers to add sidechains to Bitcoin, but the Bitcoin Core community has not agreed to adopt it. The eCash fork now functions as both an exit plan and pressure tactic, with Sztorc stating that he would call it off if Bitcoin activates the Drivechains proposals before August.
