KuCoin EU Bolsters AML Team to Address Austrian Regulatory Concerns

In an effort to address concerns raised by its regulator, the European division of the global cryptocurrency exchange KuCoin has enhanced its anti-money laundering and compliance capabilities. This move comes after the Austrian Financial Market Authority (FMA) ordered KuCoin EU to halt its European operations due to a shortage of AML and compliance staff. To rectify this, KuCoin EU, which holds a Markets in Crypto Assets (MiCA) license from the FMA, has appointed Carmen Kleinhans as its Anti-Money Laundering Officer, alongside expanding its broader AML function. Additionally, the exchange has hired seasoned Austrian compliance experts Stephan Klinger and Bernd Träxler as Deputy Anti-Money Laundering Officers. According to KuCoin EU Managing Director Sabina Liu, the exchange has maintained open communication with the FMA since the regulatory action in February. Liu emphasized the exchange's commitment to transparency and dialogue with the regulator, stating that they have been supportive and honest throughout the process. Since February, KuCoin EU has been focused on strengthening its compliance team, making several key appointments to build a robust team. However, the exchange has faced recent challenges, including being barred from the U.S. by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) and facing regulatory issues in Dubai for operating without the proper license. Liu was unable to provide a specific timeline for when the Austrian regulator would permit KuCoin EU to resume its European operations, indicating that discussions with the FMA are ongoing.
