US Regulator Takes New York to Court Over Prediction Market Dispute

In a recent lawsuit, the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission has taken action against New York, asserting its nationwide regulatory dominance over prediction market firms. This move comes after New York sued major cryptocurrency exchanges, arguing their prediction market contracts breached state gambling laws. The CFTC insists that federal law grants it exclusive jurisdiction over commodity futures, options, and swaps traded on federally regulated exchanges, thereby preempting state law. However, a coalition of state attorneys general, including New York's, has countered that this stance undermines states' ability to safeguard their citizens. The CFTC has also launched similar lawsuits against other states, sparking a heated debate over the regulation of event contracts and prediction markets.
