Time Running Out for Bitcoin to Mitigate Quantum Computing Threat, 6.9 Million BTC at Risk

While not all aspects of Bitcoin are vulnerable to quantum computer attacks, ownership is at significant risk. Bitcoin wallets rely on a specific type of mathematics that can be compromised by quantum computers, potentially allowing unauthorized access to funds. Approximately 6.9 million Bitcoins, including those held by the cryptocurrency's creator Satoshi Nakamoto, are exposed due to their public keys being visible on the blockchain. A quantum attacker could exploit this vulnerability without needing to rush, as they can target wallets with exposed keys at their leisure. The recent Taproot upgrade has inadvertently expanded the problem by publishing keys for any Bitcoin spent since its activation. Although there are proposals, such as BIP-360 and a detection system by BitMEX Research, to address this issue, Bitcoin's lack of a formal governance structure and core developers' reluctance to engage with the problem pose significant challenges. In contrast, Ethereum has had a quantum-resistant program in place since 2018 and is actively working on migrating to quantum-safe mathematics. The clock is ticking for Bitcoin to implement effective solutions before quantum computing technology advances further, making it essential for the network to overcome its coordination challenges and find a way to safeguard the exposed coins.
