KuCoin EU Enhances Anti-Money Laundering Capabilities to Address Austrian Regulatory Concerns
In a move to address regulatory requirements, KuCoin EU, the European subsidiary of the global cryptocurrency exchange, has bolstered its anti-money laundering and compliance capabilities. This development comes after the Austrian Financial Market Authority instructed the exchange to halt its European operations due to a shortage of AML and compliance staff. To strengthen its AML function, KuCoin EU has appointed Carmen Kleinhans as its Anti-Money Laundering Officer and expanded its compliance team with the addition of seasoned Austrian compliance experts Stephan Klinger and Bernd Träxler as Deputy Anti-Money Laundering Officers. According to KuCoin EU Managing Director Sabina Liu, the exchange has maintained open communication with the FMA since the regulatory action in February, with a focus on enhancing its compliance team through multiple appointments. The exchange has faced challenges recently, including being barred from the U.S. following a CFTC order and receiving a penalty from Dubai's VARA regulator for unlicensed operations. However, a timeline for resuming European operations remains uncertain, pending discussions with the FMA.
