Nigel Farage Under Scrutiny for $6.7 Million Donation from Crypto Billionaire

According to a report by The Guardian, Reform UK leader Nigel Farage received a substantial gift of approximately £5 million, equivalent to around $6.7 million, from Christopher Harborne, a billionaire with significant ties to the cryptocurrency industry, prior to announcing his candidacy for the Clacton seat in 2024. This donation has sparked controversy, with both the Conservative and Labour parties referring Farage to the Parliamentary Standards Commissioner for allegedly failing to declare the gift in accordance with House of Commons rules. Farage has confirmed the donation, stating it was intended to ensure his safety and security following previous incidents, including a milkshake attack in 2019 and a firebomb incident at his home last year. Harborne, who holds a 12% stake in Tether, a stablecoin issuer, made the donation in 2024, before Farage's election to the Clacton seat. A spokesperson for Reform UK has defended the donation, characterizing it as a personal and unconditional gift that was made before Farage's election and is therefore exempt from disclosure requirements. However, the Commons code of conduct mandates that new MPs register any benefits received in the 12 months preceding their election, prompting the Conservative Party to request an investigation into whether any portion of the donation was utilized for political purposes rather than personal security. The Labour Party has also expressed concerns, with chair Anna Turley suggesting that Farage appears to have breached the rules once again. This development comes amid growing scrutiny of cryptocurrency donations in UK politics, with Harborne having made a record-breaking £9 million donation to Reform UK late last year. The UK government has since imposed a moratorium on crypto donations to political parties, citing concerns over the potential for foreign influence. Earlier this month, BitMEX co-founder Ben Delo disclosed a £4 million donation to Reform UK, further highlighting the need for transparency in political funding.
