Breakthrough in Quantum Attack: Researcher Claims 1 Bitcoin Bounty
The threat of quantum attacks on Bitcoin has become more tangible with a recent breakthrough. Quantum security startup Project Eleven awarded a 1 bitcoin bounty to researcher Giancarlo Lelli for breaking a 15-bit elliptic curve key on public quantum hardware. This achievement represents a 512-fold increase over the previous public demonstration and is valued at approximately $78,000. Elliptic curve cryptography is crucial for crypto wallets to prove fund control without revealing private keys. However, quantum computers using Shor's algorithm can potentially compromise this security. Lelli's feat does not immediately jeopardize Bitcoin, as it uses 256-bit elliptic curve security, but it underscores the growing concern about quantum attacks. The previous public break was a 6-bit demonstration, and Lelli's result expanded this by a factor of 512 in just seven months. The barrier to running such attacks is decreasing, with theoretical resource estimates dropping rapidly. This development has significant implications for wallets with visible public keys, with approximately 6.9 million bitcoin at risk. To address this, Bitcoin developers have proposed migration paths, including the introduction of quantum-safe address types.
