KuCoin EU Expands Anti-Money Laundering Team to Address Regulatory Concerns

In a bid to address regulatory concerns, KuCoin EU, the European branch of the global cryptocurrency exchange, has enhanced its anti-money laundering capabilities by hiring experienced professionals. This move follows an order from Austria's Financial Market Authority (FMA) to halt business in the EU due to a shortage of AML and compliance staff. KuCoin EU, which holds a Markets in Crypto Assets (MiCA) license, has appointed Carmen Kleinhans as its Anti-Money Laundering Officer and expanded its AML function. Additionally, the exchange has hired seasoned Austrian compliance experts Stephan Klinger and Bernd Träxler as Deputy Anti-Money Laundering Officers. According to KuCoin EU Managing Director Sabina Liu, the exchange has maintained open communication with the FMA since the regulatory action in February and has been actively strengthening its compliance team. The exchange has faced challenges recently, including being barred from the US by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission and facing regulatory issues in Dubai. However, Liu could not provide a specific timeline for when the FMA would allow KuCoin EU to resume operations in Europe, stating that discussions with the regulator are ongoing.
