Kelp DAO Suffers $292 Million Exploit

A recent attack on Kelp DAO, a liquid restaking protocol, has resulted in the theft of approximately $292 million in rsETH tokens. The exploit occurred when an attacker tricked LayerZero's cross-chain messaging layer into releasing 116,500 rsETH to an attacker-controlled address. The incident has raised concerns about the security of decentralized systems and the increasing sophistication of North Korea-linked hackers. The attackers manipulated the data feeding into the system, forcing it to rely on compromised inputs and approve transactions that never actually occurred. The fallout from the exploit is being felt across the DeFi ecosystem, with Aave facing potential losses of up to $230 million. In response to the incident, Aave has frozen rsETH markets and halted new borrowing against the asset. Meanwhile, Coinbase has commissioned a report on the risks of quantum computing, which warns that while current blockchains remain secure, the industry cannot afford to wait to prepare for the potential risks of quantum computing. The report stresses that a fault-tolerant quantum computer capable of breaking widely used encryption is increasingly plausible and that preparation must begin now.
