KuCoin EU Expands Compliance Team to Address Regulatory Concerns
In an effort to placate its regulator, the European branch of the global cryptocurrency exchange KuCoin has bolstered its anti-money laundering and compliance capabilities. This development comes after the exchange was instructed to halt its European operations due to a shortage of AML and compliance staff. KuCoin EU, which is licensed under Austria's Markets in Crypto Assets (MiCA) regulation, has appointed Carmen Kleinhans as its anti-money laundering officer, alongside expanding its AML function. Additionally, the exchange has hired seasoned Austrian compliance experts Stephan Klinger and Bernd Träxler as deputy anti-money laundering officers. According to KuCoin EU Managing Director Sabina Liu, the exchange has maintained open communication with the regulator since the issue arose in February. Liu stated that the exchange has been proactive in strengthening its compliance team, making multiple appointments to significantly enhance its capabilities. This move is part of KuCoin's efforts to address regulatory concerns, having faced recent challenges including being barred from the U.S. by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission and facing regulatory issues in Dubai. However, a timeline for resuming European operations has not been disclosed, with Liu indicating that discussions with the FMA are ongoing.
