Ondo Finance Introduces Proxy Voting for $700 Million Worth of Tokenized Equities
In a significant move, Ondo Finance has introduced proxy voting for holders of its extensive range of tokenized equities, thereby enhancing the alignment of these assets with their traditional counterparts and facilitating investor participation in corporate governance decisions. Through a collaboration with Broadridge Financial Solutions, Ondo's platform now enables holders of over 250 tokenized securities to access company filings and cast their voting preferences via Broadridge's ProxyVote system. This feature allows investors to log in using their crypto wallets and access documents and governance tools that are typically reserved for traditional brokerage accounts. The introduction of proxy voting for tokenized equities is particularly noteworthy given the sector's rapid growth, with over $1.1 billion in value locked, representing a three-fold increase over the past year, according to data from RWA.xyz. As the largest issuer in this sector, Ondo has reported over $700 million in stock and ETF tokens on its Global Markets platform, catering to non-U.S. investors. The addition of proxy voting to equity tokens is significant, as these offerings have often been criticized for lacking basic governance rights. Although Ondo's tokens remain distinct from the underlying shares and do not confer direct shareholder rights, the new system enables investors to express their preferences, which Ondo can then apply when voting on the shares it holds. "This development is at the core of Ondo's vision to make traditional financial assets more accessible and bridges the gap between the benefits of being on-chain, such as free transferability and compatibility with DeFi, and the governance associated with the underlying assets," stated Matthieu de Vergnes, Ondo's global head of institutional, in an interview with CoinDesk. Broadridge, a leading processor of proxy votes in traditional markets, is extending its infrastructure to blockchain systems through this collaboration. The firm's objective is to support both digital and conventional assets within the same workflows, thereby providing investors with the same level of auditability, transparency, and compliance. According to Danielle Gurrieri, senior vice president and head of product management at Broadridge, this move will "go a long way in making the tokenized world more scalable and trustworthy for end investors."
