Ondo Finance Introduces Proxy Voting for $700 Million Worth of Tokenized Equities

In a significant development, Ondo Finance is bridging the gap between tokenized equities and their traditional counterparts by enabling investors to participate in corporate decision-making processes. Through its collaboration with Broadridge Financial Solutions, Ondo's platform now allows holders of over 250 tokenized securities to review company filings and cast their votes using Broadridge's ProxyVote system. By logging in with their crypto wallets, investors can access documents and governance tools typically available only through brokerage accounts. This move coincides with the rapid growth of tokenized equities in the crypto sector, with over $1.1 billion in value locked, representing a threefold increase over the past year, according to RWA.xyz data. As the largest issuer in this sector, Ondo has reported over $700 million in tokenized stocks and ETFs on its Global Markets platform, catering to non-US investors. The introduction of proxy voting for equity tokens is crucial, as these offerings have often lacked basic governance rights. Although Ondo's tokens remain separate from the underlying shares and do not grant direct shareholder rights, the new system enables investors to express their preferences, which Ondo can then apply when voting on the shares it holds. "This development aligns with Ondo's vision of making traditional financial assets more accessible," said Matthieu de Vergnes, Ondo's global head of institutional, in an interview with CoinDesk. "By being on-chain, investors can benefit from the free transferability and compatibility with DeFi, while also enjoying the governance rights associated with the underlying assets." Broadridge, a leading processor of proxy votes in traditional markets, is extending its infrastructure to blockchain systems through this partnership. The firm aims to support both digital and conventional assets within the same workflows. According to Danielle Gurrieri, senior vice president and head of product management at Broadridge, providing investors with the same level of auditability, transparency, and compliance will "significantly contribute to making the tokenized world more scalable, thereby establishing trust among end-investors."
