Israel Introduces its First Regulated Digital Currency: the Digital Shekel

In a landmark decision, Israel's Capital Market Authority has given the green light to a stablecoin pegged to the shekel, marking a significant milestone in the country's financial landscape. Following a rigorous two-year evaluation and pilot process, Tel Aviv-based cryptocurrency exchange Bits of Gold has been authorized to issue the token. Developed in collaboration with the Solana network, crypto custodian Fireblocks, and with auditing oversight provided by Big Four consultancy firm EY, the BILS token is poised to make a significant impact. The stablecoin sector has experienced exponential growth over the past 18 months, with its value surpassing $300 billion. However, concerns have been raised about the potential loss of financial and digital sovereignty in markets outside the US, where US dollar-pegged tokens dominate. The introduction of the digital shekel aims to address these concerns, leveraging the currency's strong performance - with a gain of over 20% against the dollar in the past year - to position it alongside other leading currencies in blockchain-based financial systems.
