Crypto Coalition Unveils Technical Proposal to Mitigate Aave Token Exploit

In a concerted effort to repair the damage caused by a massive token exploit, DeFi United has devised a step-by-step plan to restore the backing of rsETH. This plan, shared on Aave's official X account, details a coordinated cleanup operation that leverages Aave's infrastructure to stabilize markets. The exploit, which occurred on April 18, involved an attacker exploiting a vulnerability in rsETH's bridge, resulting in the release of 116,500 rsETH tokens without proper accounting. These tokens were subsequently dispersed across multiple wallets and utilized as collateral on various lending platforms, including Aave. The proposal aims to address two key issues: restoring the backing of rsETH and unwinding the loans created using the exploited tokens. To achieve this, DeFi United has secured sufficient ETH commitments to fully re-collateralize rsETH, which will be fed back into the system in stages. In tandem, the plan involves carefully unwinding the damaged lending markets. This entails dealing with the positions opened by the attacker on Aave, which are essentially loans backed by rsETH that should not have existed. By temporarily adjusting the valuation of rsETH within the system, these bad positions can be liquidated or closed more smoothly, allowing for the recovery of underlying assets like ETH. The successful execution of this plan hinges on governance approvals across multiple chains, the deployment of committed funds, and a smooth unwind. While not without risk, the proposal reflects a coordinated response aimed at restoring the backing of rsETH and stabilizing affected markets.
