Jesse Pollak of Coinbase Foresees AI Agents Revolutionizing Crypto Payments
The emergence of AI agents is transforming online transactions, with crypto infrastructure poised to play a crucial role, according to Jesse Pollak of Coinbase. In a recent interview, Pollak noted that capabilities considered impossible just nine months ago are now feasible due to the rapid advancement of autonomous AI systems. A key requirement for these agents is the ability to transact natively. This need is driving interest in 'agentic payments,' where AI systems can autonomously pay for services such as data access, computing, or travel bookings. Pollak believes that the open-source payments protocol x402, developed by Coinbase and collaborators including Microsoft, Google, and Mastercard, will be a vital component of this ecosystem. X402 enables on-demand API payments without subscriptions or traditional billing systems, leveraging blockchain-based payments to allow agents to make global transactions instantly and virtually free of charge. Early adoption is evident, with approximately $48 million in payment volume having flowed through X402, primarily on Base, the Ethereum layer-2 network founded by Pollak. The long-term goal is to create an open marketplace where agents can access services programmatically without human intervention. While fully autonomous businesses are emerging, Pollak suggests that the immediate impact will come from individuals using AI to enhance their performance. For cryptocurrency, the main challenge remains adoption, with Pollak arguing that the key to success lies not in better marketing, but in making crypto payments invisible and seamless.
