Time is Running Out for Bitcoin to Mitigate Quantum Computing Threat

While not all aspects of bitcoin are vulnerable to quantum computer attacks, ownership is at significant risk. Bitcoin wallets rely on a specific type of mathematics that can be compromised by quantum computers, potentially allowing hackers to steal coins. Approximately 6.9 million bitcoin, including those owned by the cryptocurrency's pseudonymous creator Satoshi Nakamoto, are exposed due to their public keys being visible on the blockchain. A quantum computer could exploit this vulnerability, draining the affected wallets. The recent Taproot upgrade has expanded the problem, as any bitcoin spent since its activation has published the key protecting the remaining balance at that address. Although there are proposals to address the issue, such as adding quantum-safe address types or installing a detection system, none have gained broad support from bitcoin's core developers. The lack of a formal governance process and funding for engineering work makes it challenging for bitcoin to coordinate an effective response, unlike other blockchains like Ethereum, which has a formal quantum-resistant program in place. The clock is ticking for bitcoin to implement a solution before the threat becomes a reality.
