Israel Introduces Its First Regulated Digital Currency: The Shekel Stablecoin
In a groundbreaking move, Israel's Capital Market Authority has given the green light to the country's inaugural regulated stablecoin, pegged to the value of the shekel. Following a rigorous two-year evaluation and pilot phase, Tel Aviv-based cryptocurrency exchange Bits of Gold has been authorized to issue the token. The stablecoin, dubbed BILS, is the result of a collaborative effort between Bits of Gold, the Solana network, and prominent crypto custodian Fireblocks, with auditing and oversight provided by the esteemed consultancy firm EY. The stablecoin market, which has experienced exponential growth over the past 18 months to surpass $300 billion, is primarily dominated by US dollar-pegged tokens. However, the emergence of formally regulated stablecoins in key markets has sparked concerns regarding the potential loss of financial sovereignty in non-US markets. The Israeli shekel, bolstered by a thriving tech sector and prudent macroeconomic management, has demonstrated remarkable resilience, gaining over 20% against the US dollar in the past year. By introducing the shekel to the blockchain, Israel is positioning its currency alongside other leading currencies, such as the euro, yen, and Singapore dollar, which are increasingly being integrated into blockchain-based financial systems.
