KuCoin EU Bolsters Anti-Money Laundering Team to Address Austrian Regulatory Concerns
In a move to address the concerns of its regulator, the European division of the global cryptocurrency exchange KuCoin has enhanced its anti-money laundering and compliance capabilities. This development comes after the exchange was instructed by Austria's Financial Market Authority (FMA) to halt its European operations due to a shortage of staff in AML and compliance roles. KuCoin EU, which holds a Markets in Crypto Assets (MiCA) license issued by the FMA, has appointed Carmen Kleinhans as its Anti-Money Laundering Officer (AMLO). Additionally, the company has expanded its broader AML function and hired seasoned Austrian compliance experts Stephan Klinger and Bernd Träxler as Deputy Anti-Money Laundering Officers. According to KuCoin EU Managing Director Sabina Liu, the exchange has maintained open and transparent communication with the FMA since the regulatory action in February. Liu stated that the exchange has been actively strengthening its compliance team, resulting in a significant expansion of the team. KuCoin has faced recent challenges, including being barred from the U.S. market by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) and facing regulatory issues in Dubai for operating without the necessary license. Liu did not provide a specific timeline for when the Austrian regulator would permit KuCoin EU to resume its European operations, indicating that discussions with the FMA are ongoing.
