Jesse Pollak of Coinbase Foresees AI Agents Revolutionizing Crypto Payments
The swift emergence of AI agents is transforming online payment landscapes, with crypto infrastructure poised as a natural ally, according to Jesse Pollak of Coinbase. In an interview with CoinDesk, Pollak noted that what was nearly unachievable just nine months prior is now entirely feasible, thanks to the rapid advancement of autonomous AI systems. As these agents continue to evolve, a pressing need has become apparent: the requirement for innate transaction capabilities. This shift is sparking interest in 'agentic payments,' where AI systems can autonomously compensate for services such as data access, computational power, or travel reservations. Pollak expressed his hope that a crucial component of this framework will be x402, an open-source payment protocol developed by Coinbase in collaboration with entities like Microsoft, Google, and Mastercard, enabling on-demand API payments without the need for subscriptions or traditional billing systems. By leveraging blockchain-based payments, agents can execute a single API or smart contract call to transfer funds globally, virtually instantly, and at negligible cost, Pollak explained. Early signs of traction are already evident, with approximately $48 million in payment volume having been processed through X402 to date, the majority of which (about 95%) has occurred on Base, the Ethereum layer-2 network founded by Pollak and incubated by Coinbase. The ecosystem is expanding rapidly, with integrations spanning AI providers, data platforms, and travel services that agents can directly access. The long-term vision, according to Pollak, is to establish an open marketplace where agents can programmatically access services without encountering paywalls or requiring human intervention. 'The goal is for agents to operate freely,' he said, envisioning a system where software can seamlessly discover, purchase, and utilize digital services in real-time. While fully autonomous 'zero-human' businesses are beginning to emerge, Pollak believes the more significant near-term impact will stem from individuals augmenting their capabilities with AI. 'Top performers are now utilizing agents to further enhance their performance,' he described, outlining workflows powered by multiple parallel AI systems. For the crypto sector, the broader challenge remains one of adoption. Pollak argued that the solution lies not in improved marketing but in making the technology invisible to the user.
