DeFi Leaders Unite to Rescue Aave Users After Massive Crypto Hack with Hundreds of Millions in Funding

The decentralized finance world is often fragmented, but the recent crisis has brought about an unusual level of coordination and cooperation. A broad recovery effort is underway for Aave, one of DeFi's largest lending protocols, following significant losses due to the Kelp DAO exploit. This effort, informally known as 'DeFi United,' has secured around $303 million in commitments as of Monday, according to its website, although much of the capital is still pending governance approval. The exploit, which affected rsETH markets and posed risks to lending positions on Aave, has prompted a coordinated industry response. Aave Labs and other participants are working together, with a shared priority of supporting users and restoring normal market conditions. Aave's governance proposal outlines a plan to allocate up to 250,000 ETH for the recovery, and other contributors, including Aave's founder Stani Kulechov, are donating ETH. The response has extended beyond Aave, with Consensys committing up to 30,000 ETH in financial support and other ecosystem participants contributing. The effort has drawn smaller contributions from the community, including proposals from Lido, EtherFi, and Mantle. Other contributions include deposits into Aave itself, such as from Babylon Foundation and Renzo. The list of participants continues to grow, with entities like Ethena, LayerZero, and Frax Finance involved. The contributions vary in structure, with some offering grants, deposits, or credit lines, reflecting different approaches to balancing support with risk management. Aave Labs has also proposed the release of immobilized ETH into the remediation effort, aiming to make affected rsETH holders whole and restore rsETH's backing. While much of the capital remains subject to governance approval, the breadth of participation highlights the widespread impact of the exploit across DeFi. The Ethereum ecosystem has come together in response, demonstrating its strength when moving as a united front.
