Researcher Claims 1 Bitcoin Bounty for Successfully Executing Largest Quantum Attack on Underlying Technology
The potential quantum threat to Bitcoin's security has become more tangible with a recent breakthrough. Quantum security startup Project Eleven awarded a 1 bitcoin bounty, valued at approximately $78,000, to independent researcher Giancarlo Lelli for breaking a 15-bit elliptic curve key on publicly accessible quantum hardware. This achievement marks the largest public demonstration of a quantum attack on elliptic curve cryptography to date, with Lelli's result being 512 times larger than the previous public demonstration. Elliptic curve cryptography is a crucial component of cryptocurrency security, enabling wallets to prove control over funds without revealing private keys. However, quantum computers pose a significant threat to this security, as they can potentially derive private keys from public ones using Shor's algorithm. Although Lelli's achievement does not mean Bitcoin's security is immediately at risk, as it uses 256-bit elliptic curve security, it does highlight the rapid progress being made in quantum computing. The previous public break was a 6-bit demonstration, and Lelli's 15-bit result represents a significant expansion in just seven months. Theoretical estimates suggest that the resource requirements for a full 256-bit attack are decreasing rapidly, with some estimates putting the cost below 500,000 physical qubits. This has significant implications for Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, with approximately 6.9 million bitcoin sitting in wallets with visible public keys, potentially vulnerable to quantum attacks. As a result, developers are exploring migration paths, including the proposed BIP-360, which would introduce quantum-safe address types. The recent breakthrough serves as a reminder of the need for ongoing research and development to ensure the long-term security of cryptocurrencies.
