Jesse Pollak of Coinbase Foresees AI Agents Revolutionizing Crypto Payments

According to Jesse Pollak from Coinbase, the swift advancement of AI agents is transforming online payment processes, with crypto infrastructure naturally aligning as a key component. Pollak noted that what was nearly impossible just nine months ago is now achievable due to the rapid evolution of autonomous AI systems, which require inherent transaction capabilities. This shift has sparked interest in 'agentic payments,' enabling AI systems to autonomously pay for services such as data access, computing, or travel bookings. Pollak expressed his hope that the x402 open-source payments protocol, developed by Coinbase and collaborators including Microsoft, Google, and Mastercard, will play a crucial role in this landscape. The x402 protocol facilitates on-demand API payments without the need for subscriptions or traditional billing systems. By leveraging blockchain-based payments, agents can execute a single API or smart contract call to transfer funds globally, almost instantly and at virtually no cost, Pollak explained. There is already noticeable traction, with roughly $48 million in payment volume having flowed through X402, primarily on Base, the Ethereum layer-2 network founded by Pollak and supported by Coinbase. The ecosystem is expanding rapidly, with integrations across AI providers, data platforms, and travel services that agents can directly access. The long-term vision, according to Pollak, is to create an open marketplace where agents can programmatically access services without encountering paywalls or requiring human intervention, effectively allowing software to discover, purchase, and utilize digital services seamlessly in real time. While fully autonomous 'zero-human' businesses are emerging, Pollak believes the more significant near-term impact will come from individuals enhancing their capabilities with AI. He described how top performers are utilizing agents to further enhance their performance, with workflows powered by multiple parallel AI systems. For the crypto sector, the broader challenge remains adoption, with Pollak arguing that the solution lies in making crypto more invisible rather than relying on better marketing.
