US Crypto Regulatory Body to Utilize AI for Application Review

The US Commodity Futures Trading Commission, known for its openness to digital assets, is turning to artificial intelligence to offset the impact of significant workforce reductions. Chairman Mike Selig revealed in an interview that the agency is leveraging AI and automation to streamline processes, particularly in reviewing registration applications and enhancing market surveillance. Currently, the CFTC's registration process relies heavily on manual document submissions, but the agency is working to automate this process, making it more efficient. AI tools will be used to review applications, flag issues, and provide faster feedback to staff, allowing them to focus on more complex tasks. Selig's team is being trained on Microsoft's Copilot, and the agency is also developing in-house tools for reviewing swap data and market surveillance. A key initiative under Selig's leadership has been the oversight of the crypto industry, including the creation of a 'taxonomy' for digital assets in conjunction with the Securities and Exchange Commission. This move aims to provide clarity on regulatory jurisdictions for different subsets of crypto, enabling market participants to engage with crypto systems with confidence. The CFTC is also taking a strong stance on policing fraud, manipulation, and insider trading in crypto markets. Additionally, the agency has been involved in contentious issues surrounding prediction markets, with Selig asserting the CFTC's exclusive jurisdiction over these firms. The CFTC has sued several states challenging companies for violating state gaming laws and has joined a Department of Justice case against an individual accused of insider trading in prediction markets. Selig emphasized the agency's commitment to taking action against bad actors in the markets, utilizing AI to support its enforcement efforts.
